It's been a week of movement. Movement from one lifestyle to another; movement of furniture, pictures, art, little pieces of our hearts. This is the weekend that we moved things to the garage, recreated a joint studio and took back the dining room.
In five years we've accumulated enough junk that it's time to clean the closets, wash the walls and shampoo the carpets, fill boxes and bags for charity, trash, moving to the garage. As I've said before, my crafting ADD has kicked in and I needed to clean out some of the rubber stamping stuff. I hope to gather and list the stuff I have for trade, freecycle or sale soon.
It's hard to believe we've been here almost five years, but we continue to downsize and discover what we truly do not need. We are working on reaching a smaller household footprint on the planet. Not only because the price of gas (hence groceries, heating/cooling, etc) continues to rise, but because it' s the right thing to do. Where I work we are working toward a more sustainable environment as an institution. For the first time in a long time thermostats are being monitored, utility usage reductions are being considered, employees are being taught to reduce their own carbon footprints.
I can't help but think about it at home also. So, the King of Typos and I have raised the thermostat, we've changed every single lightbulb to the new flourescents and we're looking at alternative transportation methods for getting to work. We're both moving toward a more ecologically responsible and sustainable lifestyle.
And sometimes we watch little pieces of our hearts move on. On Thursday evening James came in from work to find our "Little Wonder", Jade, had fallen from her cage and died. The dogs were involved in licking her for sometime but we know they had a healthy respect of her beak, so I don't think they hurt her. There was no blood or breaks to the skin and since we do not have another bird to worry about disease, we are not doing a necropsy to find out why she died. It would be a rather large expense and it's not really important to us to know why. We will miss her little purrs of delight when she got her favorite foods, her little shriek of delight when we laughed, the "stranger danger" response to all cell phones and cameras and that's what's important. And so, we are also re-entering the lifestyle of the non-bird-household.
